Investment objective
The objective of the Fund is to achieve long term capital growth primarily from a portfolio of companies engaged in the oil and gas sector, energy generation and transmission. Additionally, the Fund may invest in companies seeking to develop and exploit new energy technologies, and companies that service the energy sector. The Manager actively manages the portfolio in order to achieve the objective with exposures to company shares, fixed interest securities and derivative instruments as appropriate. The Manager will not be restricted in respect of choice of investments by company size, or in terms of the geographical split of the portfolio. At times, the Fund may have a relatively concentrated portfolio.

Tim Guinness is the founder and Chief Investment Officer of Guinness Asset Management and Guinness Atkinson Asset Management, our sister US business. He has over 35 years’ investment experience. He founded Guinness Flight Global Asset Management Ltd in 1987 and was CEO (or joint CEO) from 1987 to 1999 and a portfolio manager of the Global Equity Fund. After Investec acquired Guinness Flight in 1998, he was Chairman of the company during the transition into Investec, as well as lead manager of the Investec Global Energy Fund. In 2003 he left Investec to set up Guinness Asset Management, which was appointed the outsource manager of Investec Global Energy Fund until 2008. Tim graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in engineering. Mr. Guinness graduated from Cambridge University in 1968 with an MA in Engineering and an MSc in Management Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970.

Jonathan Waghorn is the co-manager of the SmartETFs Smart Transportation & Technology ETF (since launch), SmartETFS Sustainable Energy II ETF, and also serves as the co-manager of the Global Energy Fund (since May 2010) and Alternative Energy Fund (since January 2019). Jonathan had 17 years’ experience in the energy sector. He joined Guinness Atkinson™ in 2013. Previously, Mr. Waghorn served as co-portfolio manager of the Investec Global Energy Fund from 2008 to 2012, succeeding Tim Guinness who managed the Investec Fund from 1998 to 2008. Prior to Investec, he served as co-head of Goldman Sachs’ energy equity research team. He was a Shell drilling engineer in the Dutch North Sea and worked as an energy consultant with Wood Mackenzie before becoming co-head of Goldman Sachs energy equity research in 2000. Mr. Waghorn graduated from the University of Bristol with a Masters in Physics in 1995.
