Investment objective
The aim of the Fund is to provide a return on investor's investment (generated through an increase in the value of the assets held by the Fund) (gross of fees) over the long term (5 or more consecutive years beginning at the point of investment) by investing in equities (i.e. shares) of companies incorporated or listed in Europe excluding the UK. In seeking to achieve its investment objective, the Fund will invest at least 70% of its total assets in the equities (i.e. shares) and equity related investments (i.e. other investments whose value is related to equities) of companies incorporated or listed in Europe excluding the UK. Typically these will be larger companies.

Our view

person-circle-filled

  • Large cap focus
  • Combination of top down and bottom up analysis
  • Strong risk discipline

Vincent Devlin, manager of the BlackRock Continental European Fund, is very much a bottom-up stock-picker, but one who nevertheless remains aware of broader economic themes.

Devlin graduated from the University of Manchester in 1992 with a degree in Electronic Engineering. His investment career started two years later when he joined the Co-operative Insurance Society, where he spent four years before moving to Insight Investments in 1998 as a fund manager of European equities. Following a four year stint at Insight Investments, Devlin moved to Scottish Widows until 2007. He has since moved to BlackRock, where he manages this fund.

The European team at BlackRock is led by Nigel Bolton who encourages rigorous debate and teamwork. Devlin, Bolton and other members of the team also worked together at Scottish Widows.

This fund is heavily exposed to large companies and Devlin will adjust its composition based on his bottom-up idea generation where he looks for companies with good earnings and cash flow profiles. Risk management is an essential part of the manager’s investment process and he relies heavily on BlackRock’s risk analytics.
