Investment objective
To increase the value of its shares through growth in the value of its investments. The fund is actively managed and invests mainly in a widely diversified portfolio of shares from smaller capitalisation companies in the United States. Specifically, the fund invests at least 70% of total assets in shares and related securities of companies that are either incorporated in the United States of America or conduct most of their business there and that, at the time of purchase, have a market capitalisation that is equal to or smaller than the companies in the Russell 2500 Index.

Our view

person-circle-filled

Why we like the fund: This fund invests in smaller companies listed in the United States. This requires extensive resourcing because following these companies demands ongoing dialogue with executives, as well as the fact there are simply lots of them. They are often riskier than their larger counterparts because they may have fewer products or operate in fewer markets. T Rowe Price is based in the US and has an extensive team researching and investing in smaller companies. The manager is also experienced at running a fund like this and US smaller company investing is a strength of the wider business. How to use the fund: This fund is likely to require a long investment horizon of ten years or more. This should allow investors to benefit from the rewards that should come from an above-average-risk investment. The fund is a useful addition to a diversified portfolio for investors seeking additional risk and reward in a portfolio.
