FTSE 100 movers: Sainsbury's rallies; L&G in the red

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was up 0.1% at 7,775.88 in afternoon trade on Monday. Sainsbury's was the standout gainer on the index. CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson said the shares were up on reports over the weekend that Bestway, despite its denials that it was looking at an acquisition last week, may well be looking to do exactly that.

"It's important to remember that the hurdles to an acquisition remain quite high given that they would have to convince the two largest shareholders of Qatar and Vesa Investments of the merits of any deal," he said.

Auto Trader was boosted by an upgrade to 'overweight' at Barclays.

Consumer goods giant Unilever rose after saying it has appointed Hein Schumacher as its new chief executive officer. Schumacher will replace Alan Jope, who announced his intention to retire in September 2022.

Hein, who is currently CEO of Dutch dairy business Royal FrieslandCampina, became a non-executive director of Unilever in October last year. He will begin as Unilever CEO on 1 July 2023, after a one-month handover period.

Legal & General was in the red as it said Sir Nigel Wilson was planning to retire after more than a decade as chief executive. Wilson joined the company in 2009 as chief financial officer and was promoted to the role of CEO in 2012.
