US open: Stocks mixed following Nasdaq's record close
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were little changed at the bell following the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite's record close in the previous session. As of 1500 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.09% at 39,842.14, while the S&P 500 lost 0.04% to 5,306.19 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.19% weaker at 16,762.48.
The Dow opened 35.37 points higher on Tuesday, reclaiming part of yesterday's losses as the blue-chip index retreated back below the psychologically important 40,000-point mark after JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon indicated that his retirement might be sooner than originally expected and that the lender would not look to repurchase many shares at their current price.
As far as Tuesday's corporate headlines were concerned, shares in home improvement retailer Lowe's were higher on the back of its better-than-expected Q1 earnings and revenue results, while cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks traded lower after issuing in-line current-quarter guidance.
Retailer Macy's topped earnings expectations with its latest quarterly numbers as its new turnaround plan started to bear fruit, while Auto Zone missed estimates even as its net sales and earnings per share surpassed last year's numbers.
On the macro front, Federal Reserve governor Christopher Waller said he needs to see "several more months" of good inflation data before even considering backing interest rate cuts, while Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic said he expects to see inflation continuing to ease but cautioned that the central bank must be careful when it comes to its first rate move.
