Wednesday preview: US CPI, Burberry in the spotlight

(Sharecast News) - Wednesday will bring with it the week's key risk event - barring surprises - in the form of the latest US consumer price report.

At 1330 BST the Department of Labor is expected to announce that the year-on-year rate of increase in headline consumer prices ticked lower by a tenth of a percentage point in April to 3.4%.

Core CPI gains meanwhile were seen slowing from 3.8% to 3.6%.

Also of great interest will be a report on US retail sales due out in parallel covering that same month.

Across the Channel, at 0900 BST Eurostat will publish first quarter euro area employment and GDP figures, together with industrial production data for March.

No major economic releases are scheduled in the UK.

In the company arena, Burberry's 2024 fiscal year results will be in focus.

UBS analyst Zuzanna Pusz believes investors' attention will be on the retailer's FY 2025 outlook, growth by consumer clusters, especially in China, the latest trends and on any updates around possible cost measures.

Pusz noted how the shares' current valuation was no longer implying that Burberry's turnaround would be successful.
