Our view
Why we like the fund:
This is a relatively concentrated fund investing in listed companies in the United States. The manager is a 'value' investor, adopting a contrarian approach and often buying companies with depressed share prices. It has been investing on this basis for decades. Dodge & Cox is employee-owned, with a firm-wide investment philosophy, and offers only a handful of funds. It is well-established, with many highly experienced investors.
How to use the fund:
This could be a sensible choice for an investor with a long time-horizon of ten years or more. Dodge & Cox often buys companies which are struggling in the near term and so have depressed share prices, which makes it a 'value investor.' As such, the fund would likely blend well with another US equity fund that focuses on 'quality,' such as the Brown Advisory US Sustainable Growth Fund.
